Now a-days, our home seems to be the center of who we are. We come here to be ourselves, be with the ones we love, and invite others to join in on those experiences. It’s where we go to get out of the crazy world and unwind, or to gear up for that special themed dinner party. Houses are even structured around the elements of relaxing and entertaining. This is evident in having new homes with big grand living rooms, media rooms and wine cellars. Whatever the occasion, we want our home to be comfortable for us, our family, friends and sometimes even our dog. This puts a great emphasis on furniture selection, lighting, multi-functional pieces, fabric and color of your home. Whether you are starting from scratch or simply needing to retouch a few areas, it’s important to focus on what you want out of the space. Here are some main questions that need answers in order to get you on the right track.
- Do I or my family live formally or informally?
- What is important to us at the end of the day? Having family time over dinner? Watching a movie? Sitting quietly and reading a book? Lounging outside?
- Where do I exude the most energy? Kitchen? Garden? Dining Room?
- What colors best represent me or my family? Am I drawn to bright cool colors or deeper warming colors?
These are just some of the questions you will need to ask yourself when deciding on what the key elements will be that will make you feel comfortable at home. If you live formally and like art, you might want to choose sleek furniture and have specific lighting showcasing your hobbies. If you live informally, a soft rug and big oversized couches might allow you to relax and be at ease.
If you don’t know the answers right away to some of these questions, try looking out for what you are drawn to. Flip through pages in magazines and see what catches your eye. Imagine yourself in that setting. You will eventually find a common thread throughout all of them and that will jump start the process. Even if you like a certain piece of furniture in one style and another that’s totally different, that is ok. As long as they have a common denominator to match themselves together with, it will look fabulous.
